Covid 19 and Long COVID

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on our mental health, both as individuals and as a global community. Many of us have experienced the virus firsthand, whether through personal illness or through the loss of loved ones. The stress and anxiety brought on by the pandemic has also affected our daily lives, with many experiencing financial, social and personal challenges leading to increased levels of depression and stress.

According to the World Health Organization, the COVID-19 pandemic has had severe consequences on health systems, economies, and societies around the world. Many people have lost their livelihoods and businesses have gone bankrupt. The pandemic has also resulted in widespread psychological distress, with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress being reported. There have also been concerning increases in suicidal thoughts and behaviours.

Certain groups have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

  • FIFO, DIDO, BIBO and SISO workers and other LDC (Long Distance Commute) Workers often had extended time away from home, due to the restrictions with interstate travel, additional time spent in quarantine and changed work rosters. These workers were separated from partners, family, and their community for greater periods of time, than pre and post-COVID restriction times. This has had a huge toll on the mental health of all the workers, their families, and communities.
  • Tradies and Construction Workers have been in hot demand during and post the COVID-19 pandemic and were often overworked, which impacted upon their own psychological well-being as well as their relationships. There has been an increase reported amongst Tradies and Construction Workers in their alcohol misuse, anxiety, depression and suicidal behaviour in the last few years.
  • There were repercussions from the wide-reaching and varied changes in the transport industry, due to COVID-19 from commercial aviation coming to a near standstill compared to the frenetic online retail and supply chain delivery industry.

Also, many individuals have reported ongoing symptoms associated with COVID-19, particularly fatigue which has an impact on work performance and personal relationships.

Has COVID-19 affected you?

Due to the restrictions during the pandemic, you may have experienced massive amounts of uncertainty in relation to job security, business longevity, as well as changes to your daily personal and work routines. You may also have endured financial pressures, study difficulties, and social isolation. Your world may have felt out of control, as you were bombarded with information and misinformation. The stakes were often high and there was a ripple effect through all aspects of your life.

Although the restrictions are now largely in the past, the residual effect of those few years can have a long-term effect on your mental health.

During and post-COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, you may have experienced increased feelings of anxiety, stress, burnout, depression and loneliness.  Maybe you have drank more alcohol or used drugs to help cope with your fears about your life and the future.
