Have you been involved in a traumatic event and have you not been yourself since the event(s)?
Are you having flashbacks or nightmares?
Do you feel on edge, irritable and have difficulty finding enjoyment in activities or with people that you did previously?
Do you find that you are always on the lookout and are easily startled?
Are you avoiding anything that reminds you of the traumatic event, such as thoughts, people, conversations or the location?
Is your sense of security undermined and you feel unsafe, overloaded, helpless and disconnected from your ‘world’?
If so, you may be experiencing a traumatic response!
What is trauma and a traumatic response?
Often overpowering psychological and physical responses can result from being involved in a life-threatening, frightening, distressing or stressful event(s). The exposure to a traumatic event can be either by direct involvement, witnessing, threatened to be harmed or learning about an event that affects other people. During and after a traumatic event, your body goes into survival mode (fight, flight, freeze) and such a response is considered ‘a normal reaction to an abnormal event’.
Trauma may have an obvious cause with the symptoms you experience being directly related to a specific event such as a natural disaster, physical assault or serious accident.
Or your trauma responses may be as a result of repeated or prolonged exposure to a series of events such as child abuse or domestic violence (Complex Trauma).
Maybe you have experienced the shared psychological impact of a traumatic experience(s) that shatters the very fabric of a whole society, culture or group of people, such as pandemics, war, terrorism, oppression, poverty and natural disasters (Collective Trauma).
Trauma often has no timeframe – the event(s) could have occurred days or years ago.
With longer-term post-traumatic reactions, there is often the presence of other disorders such as Depression, anxiety and Substance Abuse.
How can psychological counselling help you manage your traumatic responses?
If your symptoms do not appear to be lessening with time and they are starting to interfere with your life, work, relationships and daily functioning, you could benefit from engaging in therapy.
Our goal is to help you understand your responses and help you process the trauma, so that the symptoms encroach less on your daily life and functioning. Therapy can help you to work towards feeling safe and stable in your world, so you can have good work-life balance, build your resilience and overall be more content, healthier, productive and enjoy life.
