Grief and loss

  • Are you battling to function, due to the overwhelming emotions and consuming thoughts after your tragic loss?

  • Do you feel that your life has been irreparably damaged by your loss?

  • Does it feel that your life has no purpose, and nothing really matters anymore?

  • Are you feeling a roller coaster of emotions maybe of sadness, anger, disbelief, utter despair, helplessness relief and/or guilt?

If so, you may benefit from grief counselling.

What is grief?

Grief is a normal response to a loss of someone or something very significant in our lives. Although grief is a natural part of life, it doesn’t make it any easier to cope with as our loss is permanent.

Grief can occur after the loss of:

  • a loved one,
  • a pet
  • a meaningful or significant possession,
  • financial stability
  • a job or career
  • a relationship
  • home and community due to a natural disaster
  • stability and security (or life as you knew it), particularly after a life transition such as: empty nesting, retiring, moving away from your support network or having a loved one diagnosed with a serious illness

A heart-breaking loss can affect your entire life as you come to terms with how your life has been turned upside down. Your thoughts, emotions, behaviours, spiritual being and physical body can all be impacted.

Waves of emotions can come out of left field, even at times when you are doing something that previously brought you enjoyment. It may be hard to think about anything apart from your loss and you can’t focus or get enjoyment from anything else in your day-to-day life. Perhaps you are experiencing physical symptoms such as nausea, tension, headaches or a tight chest.

How psychological counselling help you when you are grieving?

Grief is part of the human experience and counselling can help guide you through the process of loss and the emotions you’re experiencing.

How you grieve is unique to you, there is no set path that grief takes you on. So, there is no right or wrong way to grieve, it is your own personal journey.

Therapy helps you accept your loss, process your emotions and keep your memories alive. Grief counselling can help you come to terms with what has happened, as well as understand the physical and emotional symptoms you are experiencing. With grief counselling, you can learn to integrate your grief into your life, so you can remember and honour your loss. So, as you adapt to your loss, your grief finds a place to exist in your life, as you plan for the next stage of your life.

You will work collaboratively with your Mental Health Practitioner to develop a counselling plan to be fit your personal situation and emotional needs.
