Telehealth

A Telehealth consultation is a counselling or therapy session with a Mental Health Practitioner that is via video, either on your telephone, tablet or computer in the privacy of your own comfortable space. Your Telehealth session can also be conducted via a telephone call if that suits you better. Sometimes we do a mixture of both depending on your circumstances or if there are internet problems.

A Telehealth session via video link is similar to an actual consultation in your Practioner’s physical office, however, you and your Mental Health Practitioner are both on a screen and not physically in the same room.

Telehealth sessions are suitable when you:

  • Can’t easily access a Mental Health Practitioner’s physical clinic, due to your work circumstances, work commitments and time schedules
  • Travel for work on a LDC (Long Distance Commute), are a FIFO/BIBO/ DIDO/ SISO worker or Long-Haul Truck Driver
  • May want to continue counselling, whilst working away from home
  • Just don’t want to go to a Practitioner’s actual physical clinic and would prefer your sessions via Telehealth
  • Want a therapy session  in the comfort of your space
  • Have mobility difficulties and can’t easily access clinics
  • Have transport limitations
  • Find it hard to fit in yet another appointment to travel to
  • Are anxious about going to medical centre or sitting in a clinic’s waiting room
  • Want continuity of care by having regular sessions
  • Are anxious leaving your home
  • Have children or are a Carer for other family members and therefore find it difficult to get to appointments
  • Are caring for medically fragile children or elderly parent(s), so you don’t want to risk exposing yourself and your family to illnesses/viruses
  • Are unwell or need to isolate or are concerned about being exposed to illness yourself
  • Can’t access a Mental Health Practitioner easily
  • Are concerned about privacy and confidentiality within your community e.g. rural communities
  • Fear an accidental encounter with someone you know in a Practitioner’s waiting room
  • Want a joint session with someone else ( a partner, family member or friend) when you are living or working in different locations

A Telehealth session is not suitable if you are:

  • In a current urgent crisis or an emergency situation
  • Having current suicidal thoughts or current thoughts of others
  • Under the age of 16 years old
  • Mandated to undergo therapy or counselling by a court
  • having difficulty with a reliable internet connection and having poor phone reception.

If you are in a crisis, please call:

Some benefits of Telehealth sessions are:

  • Instead of travelling in traffic to appointments and waiting in a busy waiting room, you can make yourself a cup of coffee or tea, go to a quiet room or space, gather your thoughts for the session and start your session in a more focussed, comfortable and relaxed state of mind
  • Feeling safe talking in your own space
  • Saving time and money by eliminating the trip to and from the ‘bricks and mortar” clinic
  • You don’t have to deal with unreliable and confusing public transport
  • You are not limited to seeing a particular Mental Health Practitioner and you can widen the net in choosing a Practitioner
  • Weather is not an issue you have to deal with
  • If living in a rural or remote community, you can still easily access therapy.
  • Anonymity is maintained by not coming into the Mental Health Practitioner rooms and there is no fear of a random run-in with someone you know in the clinic waiting room
  • Continuity of care is kept, by being able to see your Practitioner on a regular basis, particularly if you travel a lot with a LDC (Long Distance Commute), are a FIFO/BIBO/ DIDO/ SISO worker or Long-Haul Truck Driver and are not able to get to a Mental Health Practitioners clinic for all of your sessions

Research studies demonstrated that Counselling and Psychology sessions via Telehealth are as effective as traditional in-the-office therapy.

Yes, you can access our services anywhere in Australia, so long as you have good  internet access or phone reception.

At Telehealth Psychology Services our Practitioners do not see clients under the age of 16 years of age.

Unfortunately, if you are claiming for your session on Medicare or your Private Health fund,  you are unable to have a subsided consultation, as it is a Medicare and Private Health Fund requirement for both the Mental Health Practitioner and the client to be in the country.

If you not claiming through Medicare or your private health fund and you are a private paying client, you may be able to have your sessions. (Note this is not applicable for people in the USA and Canada). However, please check with us before you make an appointment if you are overseas and we can check with the Practitioner to clarify if they are covered with their  Professional Indemnity Insurer.

While there are many benefits from using Telehealth for your psychology sessions, there can also be a few limitations or risks, such as:

  • Occasional difficulties with technology including internet and computer failures
  • Some non-verbal cues may be missed, which can be overcome by discussing any issues or concerns you have with your Mental Health Practitioner
  • Formalised equipment-based assessments can’t always be conducted via Telehealth (some of these assessments are becoming more adaptable to technological delivery)
  • For impairments affecting communication, such as hearing impairments a Telehealth session may not be ideal.

Psychological Therapy and Counselling

Our Mental Health Practitioners are Psychologists (Clinical and General), Social Workers and Counsellors.

Telehealth Psychology Services’ Mental Health Practitioners are highly experienced, with all having over 20 years’ experience working in the Mental Health field. They have also worked in other careers or jobs, which gives yet another level to their understanding of life and work experiences.

Both counselling and therapy involve talking to a Mental Health professional about your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to improve your mental health and quality of life. The terms “therapy” and “counselling” are often used interchangeably, but there are some differences between the two.

Therapy tends to be focused on the individual as a whole and addresses deeper, more complex, and longer-term problems. Therapy can help manage Mental Health conditions such as: Anxiety, Mood Disorders, Eating Disorders, Sleep Disorders and Trauma-Related Disorders. It also focuses on how you view yourself, others, and the world and helps you understand your thinking and behavioural patterns and how they affect your everyday life. Therapy can involve counselling to address specific issues.

Psychologists have undergone scientific university training in understanding human behaviour and mental processes, that is people’s thoughts and emotions. They have a minimum of 6 years of training and are registered with AHPRA. They use assessment and diagnosis and can use psychological testing to help formulate therapeutic interventions.

Counselling is a form of therapy that helps people address issues, problems, or difficulties that they may be facing in a safe and non-judgemental environment. Counselling often involves working on a specific issue for a limited amount of time. It can help you to clarify issues, explore options and develop strategies when you want to make changes in your life; such as managing a stressful situation at work or wanting to improve your family relationships. Counsellors can also help their clients achieve their personal goals.

Counselling isn’t just for when you are facing challenges or struggling. It can help you to better understand your thoughts, behaviours and emotions. It can also provide an opportunity to run ideas past someone or have a ‘sounding board’. Sometimes putting these ideas into words for someone to understand who doesn’t know the background can help you gain clarity.

Therapy and Counselling sessions with your Mental Health Practitioner aim to improve and maintain optimum mental health, as well as assist you to develop better coping strategies. Both can also involve Personal Development to ensure you are reaching your potential. Similiar to exercising physically to keep your body healthy, regular counselling and therapy sessions can help keep your mental health on track by checking in to discuss your emotional experiences, behaviours and relationships with those around you.

Both Counselling and Psychological therapy require a collaborative, supportive, warm and authentic relationship with your Mental Health Practitioner, so you can feel comfortable to explore your issues, look at new perspectives and increase self-awareness.

As you now yourself best, the development of your Therapy or Counselling Plan is done in total collaboration with you. We aim to personalise your therapy to suit your needs. So, we work with you to understand you, your circumstances, background, issues and problems, as well as maximise your strengths, abilities and capabilities to help you to move towards being who you want to be and live the best life you can.

We bring the latest theory, research and applications in counselling and therapy to the table, to help you develop strategies to facilitate change. Together we can individualise a therapy/counselling plan, to put together the pieces to help you; a process which can be inspiring, uplifting and life changing.

Referrals and Claiming

No, you do not need a referral to see a Mental Health Practitioner, you can simply book an appointment.

We accept referrals for claims made through Medicare, EAP (Employee Assistance Programmes), Private Health Funds, Department of Veteran Services (DVA) and Insurance Companies e.g. CTP claims.

Medicare

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is a referral from a GP to an Allied Health Professional, such as: Psychologists or Social Workers, which entitles you to claim a Medicare rebate on your sessions. Your Medical Practitioner will need to assess your eligibility for a MHCP.

Initially a MHCP allows you to be able to access 6 therapy sessions, which are subsidised by Medicare. After 6 sessions, if you and your Psychologist or Social Worker wish to request more sessions, they will have written communication with the referring Medical Practitioner about your progress in therapy and request more sessions. Your GP can then refer you for more sessions. Only 10 subsidised sessions can be accessed in a calendar year.

Make sure that you book a double appointment with your GP to allow enough time to complete the initial MHCP paperwork.

You will need to make sure your referral is valid at the time of your appointment with your Psychologist or Social Worker, or you will be charged the full consultation fee, and you will be unable to claim a rebate. Please check that your MHCP is dated prior to your session with your Psychologist or Social Worker and you have not exceeded the number of sessions allowed on the referral.

Rebates cannot be backdated for consultations conducted prior to the date of the referral and MHCP.

Note: A MHCP and correspondence between your Psychologist and your Medical Practitioner will be part of your medical file. This may then necessitate disclosure if your medical file is required for legal or insurance purposes.

Your Medicare rebate can be processed by the Telehealth Psychology Services Admin team after your session. Medicare will put your rebate into the bank account and it is usually done overnight, but allow 2-3 days in case of delays.

If you wish to claim your rebate from Medicare we can send you an invoice to submit to Medicare.

An Eating Disorder Plan (EDP) is a referral from a GP or Psychiatrist to a Psychologist, which allows a person diagnosed with an Eating Disorder to access up to 40 psychological treatment services within a 12-month period, with a Medicare rebate. The plan is reviewed after 10, 20 and 30 sessions. For approval for more sessions after 20 sessions you will need a review by a Psychiatrist.

Please contact us if you can’t access your GP or don’t have one and we can put you in touch with a GP who can assess your eligibility for a MHCP.

Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs)

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a fully subsidised confidential counselling service offered by an organisation to employees. The aim of an EAP is to address work, personal and family issues that may be impacting on an employee’s physical and emotional health as well as work performance, with a trained Mental Health Practitioner. They are usually fully subsidised for 3 to 6 sessions.

If the organisation you work for has an EAP with Telehealth Psychology Services, you can make an appointment directly. Please advise us if your sessions are to be funded through your organisation’s EAP when you book an appointment.

The content of your sessions and your attendance with your Mental Health Practitioner are confidential and your organisation will be invoiced without any identifying information.

If the organisation you work for does not have an agreement with Telehealth Psychology Services and is willing to cover your sessions with a Telehealth Psychology Services’ Mental Health Practitioner, please advise us by phone or email and we can contact your organisation to organise your EAP.

Private Health funds

Yes, some Private Health Funds do provide cover for Telehealth Psychology and Counselling sessions. You will need to contact your Private Health Fund to find out if you are covered for Telehealth sessions (please provide them with your Mental Health Practitioners’ occupation) and the amount that you will be rebated.

After your session, you will be provided with an invoice and you will need to submit it to your Health Fund for your rebate.

Please note that you cannot claim on your Private Health Fund, as well as Medicare for the same session.

Department of Veteran Affairs

Yes, we are able to cover DVA referrals. DVA referrals are for 12 sessions per treatment cycle. After each treatment cycle, a letter is written to your referring Medical Practioner and they can refer you for a further 12 sessions.

If you are having your sessions via telephone you will need to be able to access a computer or a smartphone for a videolink session for the initial consultation of each treatment cycle.

Counsellors are unable to provide sessions under DVA.

WorkCover

We do accept WorkCover Queensland referrals.

Insurance company - Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance

Insurance companies may provide fully subsided funding for psychology consultations.

You will require a referral from your GP, and approval from the Insurer. After the first session, your Psychologist will complete a Provider Treatment Plan and submit it to the insurance company for approval.

Counsellors are unable to provide sessions under CTP.

Technology

Yes you can use a smart phone or tablet.

Yes you can have your session by telephone.

You will also need a reliable internet connection. You will need a computer, phone or tablet with a functioning microphone and webcam for your Telehealth sessions.

The telehealth sessions are secure as the software used is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliant, which are the rules and standards set by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for protecting client/patient data.

  • Click on the Book Now button on the Telehealth Psychology Services website
  • By contacting the Telehealth Psychology Services Administration team directly on 0481881188 or admin@telehealthpsychologyservices.com.au
  • In your session with your Mental Health Practitioner (at the end of your session)
  • Directly via your client portal

A session with a Mental Health Practitioner is 50 minutes long.

You can have a double session, however, if you are making a claim on Medicare,  you can only claim one Medicare subsided session per day. Check if you can claim the second session on your Private Health Fund. Alternatively, you can pay privately for the consultation without claiming a rebate.

Before your first appointment, you will be sent an email with a few forms to be filled in. There will be a Client Intake form, Telehealth Consent form, Financial Consent and a Client Information Form. This will explain a lot of the information in more detail in regard to your Telehealth session.

Please note this paperwork will need to filled out before you can have our first session. If you have any questions about this please contact us.

The number of sessions that make up your individualised treatment plan are to be decided on between yourself and your Mental Health Practitioner, so this can vary for each individual. However, at the end of the day, it is your choice of how many sessions you would like to engage in. Usually, people start with sessions on a weekly or fortnightly basis, however, you can have less or more if needed. You can discuss the amount and frequency of sessions with your Mental Health Practitioner.

At stages through therapy, some people may have a pause and return after a few weeks or months or alternatively, they might contact their Mental Health Practitioner as needed.

At Telehealth Psychology Services we provide short- and longer-term therapy and counselling. Longer-term therapy may be necessary to address past traumas or entrenched, problematic patterns, whilst shorter-targeted psychological intervention or counselling may focus on a particular problem or current difficulty or struggles. Other people want to touch base with a therapist for general self-development and not necessarily focus on a specific problem.

Yes, we offer sessions with some of our Mental Health Practitioners after hours (until 7pm on some weekdays) and there is weekend availability.

No, Telehealth Psychology Services do not do legal assessments, court reports or custody assessments.

It happens! So if you don’t think your Mental Health Practitioner is a right fit for you, just contact us and we will discuss your needs and set you up with an appointment with another Mental Health Practitioner.

Registered health professionals are regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).  AHPRA has developed guidelines stating that testimonials, as part of advertising are not permitted.

No, at Telehealth Psychology Services we do not provide cognitive and personality assessments at this stage.
