Burnout

  • Do you feel under pressure, exhausted, overwhelmed and just unable to cope with the demands placed on you?

  • Do you find it hard just to complete everyday routine tasks?

  • Are you becoming easily irritated, even at the slightest little thing?

  • Are you juggling too many balls and maybe not as well as you would like to?

  • Are you doing everything for everyone else and leaving yourself behind?

  • Are you just not as sharp mentally as you usually are and find yourself worrying excessively and procrastinating?

  • Do you experience physical symptoms, such as headaches, muscle tension, exhaustion, poor sleep, stomach problems, getting sick a lot or heart palpitations?

If so, you could be experiencing burnout!

So, what is burnout?

Burnout is more commonplace than you think! Australian workers have the highest incidence of burnout in the world, with more than half having suffered from burnout in the 12 months. Burnout is referred to as the new ‘worker pandemic’.

Burnout is a state of complete physical and emotional exhaustion caused by unrelenting stress. Work-related issues can often trigger burnout, however it can occur in other roles, such as parenting, homelife, caregiving, and relationships.

Burnout is often a gradual process that can sneak up on you, and you may not even realise it’s happening until it’s too late. Burnout forces you to put the brakes on, something has to give and it usually you!

Factors that can contribute to burnout may include:

  • High levels of commitment to your role,
  • Feeling constantly overworked or time-pressured with high expectations to perform
  • Conflicts with others
  • a lack of control
  • A toxic or frenetic workplace, home environment or relationship
  • An unchallenging work role, poor instructions or lack of support

Personality factors can also come into play, particularly if you are a high achiever and competitive with a desire for perfectionism and control. You may also have difficulty delegating.

In regards to your lifestyle, there can be a lack of work-life balance with minimal support, too many responsibilities, and therefore a lack time or energy for self-care.

Signs that you may be experiencing burnout are:

  • feeling physically and mentally exhausted
  • alienating yourself from others and work activities
  • performing at a reduced capacity at work or with personal responsibilities
