Life Transitions and Change

  • Do you find it a struggle to cope with significant life changes or difficult circumstances?

  • Do you feel anxious, overwhelmed, unprepared or uncertain about how to navigate the changes ahead?

  • Are you criticising yourself for not handling change as well as others seem to?

  • Do you find that your thoughts are full of “what ifs”?

It’s natural to resist change, but how you deal with it can have a big impact on your life. While it may seem like some people handle change and life transitions easily and happily, the truth is that it’s not always that easy.

What are Life Transitions?

Life transitions are times of significant change and affect all of us. As our life evolves, our circumstances, relationships, and ourselves naturally change. Although people yearn for certainty, predictability and consistency, however we all know that the saying ‘change is the only true constant in life’ has merit.

Life transitions may be gradual or naturally occurring, like: leaving school, reaching adulthood or middle age. Other times of change can be carefully planned, for example: moving out of home, travelling alone for the first time, or getting a job.  Some life transitions can be totally unwanted and unexpected and force you to change, such as: a serious accident, an illness, a diagnosis or death of a loved one.

There are transitions in life that may be unsettling and create feelings of insecurity, fear, overwhelm, and a sense that our world has been turned upside down. Others might give rise to a sense of relief that you welcome and embrace the benefits that come with the change.

While we expect that negative changes will be hard to manage, even anticipated, positive changes too can result in a tricky adjustment period.

Major life transitions may include:

  • Becoming a teenager then young adulthood
  • Having a baby
  • Marriage
  • Separation or divorce
  • Starting a new relationship
  • Ending a relationship (intimate, friendship, work colleague, family member)
  • Selling and buying a home
  • Changing jobs
  • Moving to a new city or country
  • Celebrating a milestone birthday
  • Mid-life changes (e.g., menopause)
  • Late adulthood
  • Betrayal
  • Empty nesting
  • Retirement
  • Significant loss of a person, job/career or pet
  • Death
  • Having an accident or serious illness
