Stress

We all experience stress: it’s part of being a human being. But let’s face it: You have a lot going on and life can be overwhelming!

So, ask yourself –

  • Are you juggling too many balls and maybe not as well as you would like to?

  • Does everyone else seem to be on top of their lives and not only coping well, but thriving?

  • Do you find yourself struggling to keep up in a world of constant change and advancements?

  • Are you doing everything for everyone else and leaving yourself behind?

  • Are you just not as sharp mentally as you usually are and find yourself worrying excessively and procrastinating?

  • Do you experience physical symptoms, such as: headaches, muscle tension, exhaustion, poor sleep, stomach problems, getting sick a lot or heart palpitations?

  • Are you trying to manage your stress through unhealthy behaviours such asdrinking excessive amounts of alcohol, emotional eating, drugs, gambling, or maybe compulsive shopping?

If so, you may benefit from stress management counselling!

What is stress?

Stress is a normal part of life; we will all encounter it.

Stress is a physiological response to challenges or perceived threats in your environment. It is characterised by the activation of your body’s fight or flight response. This response can help you cope with short-term stressors and can even be beneficial in manageable doses, as it can help push you to make positive changes, such as leave a toxic job or relationship or improve your performance.

However, when you are exposed to prolonged or excessive stress, there can be negative impacts on your physical, mental, and emotional health.

Dealing with the many factors in your life — family, work, finances, health, major life events, relationships, and just keeping up with the demands and pace of a hectic life can be stressful. Throw in any current or unresolved past losses, adversity, or trauma and this a sure-fire recipe for excess stress.  It’s so easy for everyday stress to turn into a substantial barrier to functioning adequately as well as your ability to live your life to the fullest. You will also find that positive times in your life can also be stressful, such as: getting married, competing in sporting events or receiving an award.

Stress symptoms can affect your body, thoughts, emotions and behaviour.

Physical symptoms of stress that you may also experience are: headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, chest pain, sweating, poor sleep, stomach problems, and heart palpitations. If not managed, stress can exacerbate many existing health problems, such as heart disease, hypertension, obesity and diabetes.

Stress can also affect your thoughts and mood and lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, anger and burnout.

Unhealthy behaviours that you might find yourself using that are associated with managing stress may include: substance abuse, social isolation, and unhealthy eating habits.

How can psychological counselling help you manage your stress?

If your symptoms are persisting and are interfering with your life, work, relationships or daily functioning it may necessary to engage in therapy.  When left unmanaged the symptoms of stress can contribute to poor general health overall in the long term.

Effective stress management helps you interrupt the negative impact that stress has on your life, so you can have good work-life balance, build your resilience and be more content, healthier and enjoy life. Learning how to manage your stress can also improve your physical health, relationships and increase your productivity.
